“ 先述のデザインコンセプトを取り入れることで、マツダの考える日本的なアイデンティティを表現している。細部ディティールに至るまで評価は高く、分銅型ブレーキランプ・楕円形ウィンカーランプ・丸型リバースランプ・それを取り囲むリフレクターを一体でデザインしたリアコンビネーションランプは、デザイン性と機能性の両立を評価され、ニューヨーク近代美術館 (MoMA) に展示・永久収蔵されている。 ノースリーブの女性の肩に風が当って冷えない位置にドアミラーを配置したり、爪のマニキュアが剥げない数値にドアノブの溝の深さを設定するなど、女性に配慮した部分も多い。ヘッドライトはリトラクタブル方式が採用されている。格納時の丸みを帯びた外観に加え、展開時に現れる丸型二灯式ランプによって表現される表情を好むオーナーも多い。特に正面から見た時の佇まいは、精悍な表情でスポーツ性をアピールするデザインとは一線を画すものである。過激なスポーツ性を廃し、運転を楽しむための車作りに徹したロードスターの性格をよく表していると考える向きもある。
